About Department

The Department of English at G. S. Tompe Arts, Com & Science College is one of its oldest departments and one of the premier departments of the college, offering Compulsory English to B.A. and B.Com since 1968 and English Literature as an optional subject from 1994-1995 and English as compulsory subject to B.Sc. I from 2007.

English department has also recognized Research Centre for PhD Degree from 29.12.2019. There are three supervisors including Dr. Mangesh R. Adgokar from the department and from other colleges Dr. Dinesh Tatte ad Dr. Yogesh Kashikar joined the centre. Three students are awarded PhD degree from Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati under Dr. Mangesh R. Adgokar and four students are perusing their research work under him and two students are perusing their research under Dr. Dinesh Tatte.

Dr. Mangesh R. Adgokar is the Chairperson, Board of Studies in Science Languages, Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati (2022-2027) and the member of Board of Studies in English, Punyashlok Ahilyadevi Holkar Solapur University, Solapur (2022-2027). Dr. Atul S. Sarode is also a member of Board of Studies in English, Sant Gadge Baba Amravati University, Amravati (2022-2027)

At the undergraduate level, the Department of English aims to enhance students’ employability skills and acquaint them with contemporary trends in English literature and language studies. Students are encouraged to participate in the teaching-learning process to develop their skills for original, independent and analytical thinking and appreciation. Strategies of teaching include the lecture method, audio-visual techniques, student seminars and class discussions.

The most singular feature of this department is its commitment towards the holistic growth of its students by revisiting the pedagogic practices for the students to learn and grow. Alongside, the department’s association with other college offers students appropriate exposure.  The department works to inculcate a spirit of collaboration and collegiality between faculty members and students, thus looking to achieve wholesome progress at all stages.

The department has a Language Lab of 15+1 computers with Orell Software and projector to enhance students’ linguistic skills. The language lab is open to all faculty students for motivating them in English proficiency and to get practice for enhancing language skills. Regular Teaching -Learning supplemented with additional Academic Support for weak learners. The Department offered a ‘Soft Skill Certificate Course’ for the batch of 20 students/advance learners. From time to time, the department has been offering specific courses and programmes to serve the need of students coming from non-English medium background.

Equipped with a degree in English and English Literature, a wide scope of careers is open to students, namely; academia (teaching and research in Literature, Language etc.), content writing, technical writing, creative writing, copywriting, digital marketing, editing and proofreading, translation and interpretation etc or they can pursue higher studies.

Teaching methods adopted to improve student learning   :

The Faculty use the modern Teaching methods like PowerPoint presentation & Chart. The Faculty Members used modern Teaching aids including PPT, Interactive Board, online Apps for effective Teaching and prepares their lectures by downloading video, PPT pictures and illustrations from internet.                                                                       

Participation in Institutional Social Responsibility (ISR) and Extension activities: The faculty members participated in co-curricular, extra-curricular and social activities and worked for organizing committee (conferences, Workshop etc.)
